There are 8.23 Billion Skin Types!

There are 8.23 Billion Skin Types!

IS MY SKIN OILY, DRY, OR JUST… CONFUSED?

Knowing your skin type is the first step to a radiant complexion. Yet, it’s rarely straightforward. Factors like weather, age, hormones, eating habits, sleeping habits, and even your zip code can flip your skin’s behavior overnight. Your dry skin may be different than my dry skin. In reality, there are as many skin types as there are people on this planet – as of today about 8.23 billion!

On top of that, your skin type isn’t static. It changes. That’s the universal truth!

Having said that, skin types need to be categorized to the best of knowledge and catered to accordingly. This blog will decode how to identify your skin type, why it matters, and how to adapt your routine as your skin evolves.

THE UNIVERSAL QUESTION - WHAT’S YOUR SKIN TYPE

Skin types fall into four main categories: oily, dry, combination, normal and sensitive. Let’s try to figure out yours:

The Bare-Face Test

1. Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser.

2. Wait for 1 hour without applying any products.

3. Observe

  1. Oily Skin – Appears shiny, especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), with enlarged pores and a tendency for acne and blackheads.
  2. Dry Skin – Feels tight, flaky, or rough, especially after cleansing, and may appear dull or irritated.
  3. Combination Skin – A mix of both oily and dry areas, usually with an oily T-zone but drier cheeks.
  4. Sensitive Skin – Prone to redness, irritation, and reactions to skincare products or environmental changes.
  5. Normal Skin – Balanced, not too oily or dry, with minimal breakouts and a healthy complexion.

Still unsure? Most of us are! And that is because our skin can behave differently day-to-day.

WHY IT’S NOT SO SIMPLE

Your skin is a living organ, not a fixed label on a skin care bottle. Here’s what influences it:

 1. Climate and Environment

  • Humid Weather: Can make oily skin oilier or balance dryness.
  • Cold/Dry Air: Strips moisture, turning combination skin dry.
  • Pollution: Triggers sensitivity or breakouts.

  2. Age and Hormones

  • Teens: Oilier due to puberty.
  • 30s+: Dryness increases as collagen declines.
  • Pregnancy/Menopause: Hormonal shifts can cause dryness or acne.

  3. Lifestyle

  • Diet: Sugar and dairy may worsen oiliness or acne.
  • Stress: Triggers inflammation (hello, sensitivity!).

CAN YOUR SKIN TYPE CHANGE PERMANENTLY?

While genetics play a role, external factors can shift your skin’s needs long-term. For example, moving from a tropical to arid climate might permanently alter your body’s needs and its exposure hence changing the skin type. Have you been working at odd hours for long enough? Your skin may need to adapt, change or act up because of the stresses it has to go through.

WHY KNOWING YOUR SKIN TYPE MATTERS

Using the wrong products can worsen issues or even break a healthy skin barrier.

  • Heavy creams on oily skin → clogged pores.
  • Harsh exfoliants on sensitive skin → redness.
  • Skipping moisturizer on dry skin → cracked barrier.

The right routine for your skin type = fewer breakouts, balanced texture, and a healthy glow.

HOW TO CARE FOR EACH SKIN TYPE

It’s action time. Your skin is your protective shield. It needs to glow not just for aesthetics but to show a healthy mind and body.

DRY SKIN

Topical Solutions

  • Sulphate Free, creamy or gel cleansers with ceramides.
  • Hyaluronic acid & Polyglutamic Acid serums + rich moisturizers
  • Cream base sunscreens
  •  Avoid hot water—it strips natural oils.

Internal Care

  • Omega-3 supplements like nuts, seeds, ghee or fatty fish (salmon) to boost hydration.
  • Humidifiers in dry climate

OILY SKIN

Topical Solutions

  • Gel-based cleansers with salicylic acid.
  • Oil-free, Niacinamide, non-comedogenic moisturizers
  • Gel Sunscreens
  • Clay masks 1-2x/week to absorb excess oil.

Internal Care

  • Hydrate (dehydration can trigger oil production).
  • Limit sugary foods; opt for zinc-rich foods (nuts, seeds).

COMBINATION SKIN

Topical Solutions

  • Use a gentle cleanser.
  • Apply lightweight moisturizer overall, and spot-treat dry areas with thicker cream.
  • Gel-based products for the T-zone.

Internal Care

  • Balanced diet with antioxidants (berries, leafy greens).

SENSITIVE SKIN

Topical Solutions

COMMON MYTHS BUSTED

You might have heard these myths and perhaps also know what is correct, but it’s time to start believing and doing it!

·       Myth: If your skin is oily, you don’t need moisturizer.

Truth: Skipping moisturizers can make oiliness worse.

·       Myth: Dry skin is just dehydrated skin.

Truth: Dry skin lacks oil; dehydrated skin lacks water (any type can be dehydrated!).

Bottomline: Embrace the Fluidity

Your skin type isn’t a life sentence, it’s a starting point. As seasons shift, stress levels rise, or you move across the globe, revisit your routine.

Talk to your dear ones, share your skin type journey and you will be surprised how the only solution is to listen to your skin, adjust accordingly, and remember: consistency beats perfection.

Happy Skin Care!
